Hollow fibre filters (e.g. Sawyer squeeze) are awesome, the one problem is if they freeze the fibre’s shatter and bacteria, parasites etc get into your water. Hmmm.

Solution? During my winter LEJOG hike I stored my filter in this stuffsack and kept that in my jacket or sleeping bag 24/7. Bodyheat keeps it nice and warm, so thanks to this sack my filter never froze, and still works!

Even if you don’t hike in winter you can get freezing temps at any time of year, (especially at night) which could destroy your filter. It’s a terrible feeling not trusting your filter, so store it in your pocket no matter the weather as an insurance policy.

One hiker I know actually ruined 8 filters by letting them freeze in his pack, so storing your filter in your jacket pocket really is a good habit to get into, and might even be a lucrative investment.

About Wild Sky Gear

Wild Sky Gear was started by Skye McGregor, a British 15 year old who hiked Lands’ End to John O'Groats solo (1500 miles). I hiked through the winter and to keep my pack light started making my own gear. I sold some of the surplus, and this turned out to be a bit more successful than I had anticipated, so now I’m constantly sewing.

Waterproofing:

The seams are fully taped so water cannot leak out through them, however water could leak through the drawcord opening. While this is unlikely to be much of an issue, you shouldn’t store moisture sensitive items in the same pocket as a filter in this stuff sack. Give the filter a good shake before putting it in here to get rid of excess water.
