This new book compiled by Andrew
Malthouse is as much a labour of love as an illustrated depiction of Swindon in
the years 1938 through to 1964. Seen through the lens of the camera of R C
‘Dick’ Riley, Andrew Malthouse impresses us immediately with the breadth of
knowledge of his subject, which includes examples of most GWR locomotive
classes, including some from the absorbed companies, as well as a detailed plan
of the works complex to orientate the various shops and locations. Finely
detailed captions provide an insight that will leave even the most ardent GWR
fans accruing even greater knowledge of their subject, whilst the same detail
is given to the stock and running sheds, the signalling and even some of the
more out of the way sidings that once made up what had once been the largest
railway works in the country. This is No 5 in the series of albums using images
from the R C Riley collection.
