If your old Knobs have melted/discoloured, this is most likely due heat damage due to the cooling fan not running.

 (this is the one behind the switches, NOT the fan for the main Oven).

The function of the fan is to cool the switchgear and the knobs, it is a very common cause of failure and will cause this issue, 

Please check that the fan motor has not failed.

Another possible cause is  a faulty oven door seal

 (not sealing properly, or loose/punctured causing heat escape).

we suggest that these are checked before fitting the replacements otherwise the same thing will happen again. This could also explain if this kind of damage has happened to the previous knobs.
