Determining the value for vintage post cards is a subjective process.

As a deltiologist, I do my best to put a fair value on items at a bargain price!

I do careful research before listing an item in order to determine an honest price.

I determine the value of vintage post cards by

the age, the rarity, the condition, the publisher, and the interest of the postcard’s subject.

Union Pacific The Overland Route

From 1865 to 1971, Union Pacific contracted with Barkalow Brothers to publish postcards and postcard folders to advertise travel on the rail road.

Sydney Denise Barkalow owned a news stand in Omaha and his brother Derrick Vail Barkalow was a printer. In 1865 they contracted with the Union Pacific to be news agents on the railroad’s trains, selling newspapers, magazines, books, candy, and other items to passengers. Eventually, they ran train station newsstands from Chicago and St. Louis to Portland and San Francisco and for a time were exclusive dealers of postcards and photo booklets for the Union Pacific.

Real Photo Postcards (1900-present)

Postcards that are actual photographic replications were first produced around 1900.  They may or may not have a white border, or a divided back, or other features of postcards, depending on the paper the photographer used.

Many of the real photo postcards being done at the current time are reproductions of earlier historic photos.  The easiest way to distinguish a real photo postcard is to look at it under a magnifying glass; it will show smooth transitions (not dots) from one tone to another.

Lithography

The printing is from a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a ball grained surface and does not have “dots” to create the illusion of a print or photo. It was invented in 1796 by German author and actor Alois Senefelder as a cheap method of publishing theatrical works. Lithography can be used to print text or artwork onto paper or other suitable material.

Lithography (from Ancient Greek meaning 'stone', and graphein, meaning 'to write') is a method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water. The printing is from a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a ball grained surface. It was invented in 1796 by German author and actor Alois Senefelder as a cheap method of publishing theatrical works. Lithography can be used to print text or artwork onto paper or other suitable material.
