Things to Know Before Dyeing your Hair

Dyeing your hair at home can be a quick and convenient way to change up your look – whether you want something completely different to your natural colour or you’re just looking to cover some greys.

1. You must always perform an allergy alert test 48 hours before using a permanent hair dye. Details on how to do this can be found in the Instruction Leaflet that comes with your colour
2. If your allergy test shows any sign of reaction, you should not use the product and seek medical advice.
3. A strand test is not the same as the allergy test – the strand test lets you test a colour result and should only be done after the allergy test.
4. Permanent hair dyes are designed to be used on natural hair for the best colour results. Always check the recommended application range (the range of natural hair colours a product is suitable for) on the side/back of the box
5. You should always follow a root regrowth application when roots start to show (c. every 4 weeks depending on the growth rate of your hair)

6. If your hair already has colour on it, it can affect the results you’ll achieve with any new hair dye if transitioning to a new shade

7. It’s recommended to grow out existing colour as much as possible before attempting a major colour transition i.e black to red

8. It’s not recommended to use bleach to remove colour

9. Use a deep cleansing shampoo 48 hours before you colour – this will help to remove styling product build-up and other residues that may prevent the colour from taking as effectively to your hair

10. Permanent hair dyes should not be used more frequently than recommended in the instruction leaflet. Over-use of permanent colours can lead to hair drying out/damage
11. Additionally, damaged hair is often more porous meaning it cannot hold on to the colour as well and fading can occur more quickly than expected.

12. If your hair feels dry or damaged, a semi-permanent or temporary colour option may be more suitable

13. Semi-permanent and temporary dyes can be used to refresh colour between permanent applications

14. Scientifically, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to colour your hair during pregnancy. The safety of hair colourant use during pregnancy is taken into account at the product development stage. However, you must remember that during pregnancy and breast feeding the body may react more sensitively to external influences. Always carry out the allergy alert test before each time you colour and if you are in doubt please consult your doctor or a dermatologist before using a hair dye

15. Make sure to have an old towel/t-shirt for application and some skin barrier cream to use around your hairline, ears and neck – this will make it easier to remove any dye that may accidentally end up on your skin
