Chamaecyparis translates as "low-growing Cypress".pisifera translates as "pea bearing", referring to the small cones of the species form.
This is a dense, upright, broadly pyramidal symmetrical tree which can grow to 50’ tall but will stay under 15’ wide. It bears awl-shaped, curving, finely pointed needles which are said to have a fluffy texture. Needles usually don’t exceed .5” in length. Under full sun conditions the needles turn a marked blue color during the winter months especially if the soil has sufficient magnesium.
Cones are small (1/4" across) and ornamentally insignificant, appearing glaucous green during summer before turning black-brown when ripe. Reddish brown bark peels in strips.
