LIFE on the MISSISSIPPI. Huck's river faces all the nation's environmental problems. Cover: Illustration by Steve Carver.

A LOOK AT LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI: For the next fortnight, as we prepare for the 20th anniver-sary of Earth Day, attention will once again focus on the environment. As our contribution, NEWSWEEK sent a team of correspondents and photographers to the Mississippi River, where--from nuclear power to wildlife and dangerous wastes--all the environmen-tal issues facing the nation can be found. The re-sulting story is one of redemption--the eagles are being saved--and de-spair--life-giving, un-spoiled wetlands continue to be destroyed. Society: Page 66.

BUSH'S BALANCING ACT While the Soviet Union continued its campaign of intimidation in Lithua-nia, George Bush agreed to meet Mihail Gorbachev late next month. Bush hoped to stress the need to avoid violence in the breakaway re-public. But in announcing a summit, he may also have appeared to con-done more subtle forms of Soviet pressure. International: Page 32.

THE NINJA TURTLE MONEY MACHINE: Hey, dudes! Last weekend "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," a live-action movie version of the popular cartoon, raked in $25.4 million--the second highest premire in U.S. history. That's only the latest in a wave of hot-selling amphibious paraphernalia that includes Turtle pajamas, T shirts, comic books, cookies, break-fast cereal, rap-music records--everything but Mutant Ninja Turtle soup. Business: Page 60.
