Warrington was once proud to call itself "The Town of Many Industries'. Now it has transformed itself into a thriving business and commercial centre. Along the way the lives of the town and its communities have been irrevocably changed. This beautifully illustrated book presents a unique record of a town in transition, from the workshops and factories of the Victorian era to the office parks of our day. It is packed with a rich variety of images from the extensive photographic and picture archives of the first joint Museum and Library in the country, including many images which have never before been published. Warrington is one of the great industrial towns of north-west England, but unlike many of its neighbours it was not a 'one industry' community. Instead it has always had a very wide economic base, with many different trades and a rich variety of industrial history. Today it is one of the most successful new towns in Britain, but this economic buoyancy was built upon over 250 years of industrial and commercial growth. The town is also fortunate in another way.

Its museum and library have superb collections of photographs and other images which help to tell the story of its growth, prosperity and changing fortunes. In this new book that unique resource is employed to portray and explain the industries which flourished here during the last quarter millennium, highlighting the lives of generations of workers and the way that industry changed the face of the town itself.
