Saint Francis Xavier was a 16th-century
monastic, known for his miracles and most notably the patron saint of
missionaries and founder of the Jesuit Order. Xavier is often portrayed
in art performing one of his many miracles, most of which are miracles of
healing. At the end of the 17th-century, Giuseppe Massei published
an account of the life of Francis Xavier – a work which describes the state of
Catholicism in Rome in the mid-1500s as well as providing details on the
miracles of Xavier.
