Made for big kids, the Air Jordan 5 Retro GS ‘Top 3’ updates the classic silhouette with familiar elements drawn from a trio of OG colorways. The black nubuck upper is taken from the ‘Black/Metallic Silver’ colorway, accented with Nike Air branding and an embroidered ‘23’ from the ‘Fire Red’ 5. Both pairs are represented on the midsole, featuring a bold crimson finish with silver shark tooth detailing. Finally, the purple and teal tongue is an unmistakable remnant of the ‘Grape’ colorway.
Designer Tinker Hatfield drew inspiration from the 1940s Mustang fighter plane when designing the Air Jordan V. Released in 1990, Jordan's fifth signature sneaker was originally constructed with a leather or nubuck upper, reflective tongue, lace locks, "Nike AIR" on the heel, "shark teeth" design on the midsole, and a translucent outsole. Over the years, the Air Jordan V has been released in many new colorways.
Inspired by Michael Jordan's continued flight status and a WWII fighter plane the Air Jordan 5 was another custom Tinker Hatfield tinkered to perfection. With another scoring title under his belt and a 69 point outbreak against the Cavaliers, Jordan needed a shoe that would live up to his elevated game.
1990 proved to be a good year, Michael's aerial attack inspired the WWII Spitfire flames on the 5s. This shoe introduced a padded tongue displaying a continuance of the iconic jumpman logo, and a first for clear rubber outsoles. Additionally, a plastic lace-lock, full-grain leather and Durabuk and side vents converge to form a fighter like shoe ready for takeoff.
