A very attractive French retro bombe ring of rounded design in 18 carat yellow gold with six ridges of platinum rising to hold two round brilliant cut diamonds (approximately 0.75 carats each) to the centre. Each platinum ridge is outlined by single-cut diamonds, which are grain-set in platinum.

The workmanship in this ring is quite superb, with every stone mounting individually pierced, and despite its size, the ring is very comfortable to wear.

The ring measures 2.3cm across and 1.8cm along the finger, and is 2.8cm in height.

The 72 diamonds weigh approximately 2.55 carats in total, and are all clean and bright.

The ring is marked with the eagle’s head and the dog’s head poinçon for 18 carat gold, platinum, and French manufacture. The maker’s mark has been partially stamped and is illegible.

UK finger size M, US size 6.5, weight: 14.91 grams.

Because of different gold testing practices, (traditional acid and stone test vs. eBay's Authenticity Guarantee electronic XRF digital gold testing machine), items stamped 14k may read or actually be between 13.5k-15k gold.  Until 1981, manufacturers of jewelry could use gold that was 13.5 karat or higher and round off, thus still stamping it 14k.  Much of the jewelry sold on eBay is older than 1981.

In the same way, French 18 karat jewellery stamped with the eagle’s head guarantee mark or the owl import mark for 18 karat gold may actually be between 17.35k-19k.
