You are bidding on 10 UMBRELLA BAMBOO SEEDS - Fargesia spathacea .

See my other bamboo seeds listed .

Fargesias are non-invasive, clumping Bamboos that do not need to be contained.

Considered one of the most beautiful bamboos in cultivation, it is native to the mountains of central China .

This is an elegant, evergreen, clump-forming bamboo with graceful, arching yellow-green canes 10–14 ft (3–4 m), with a diameter of about 0.5 inch, and is hardy to −15 °C (5 °F) . The leaves are longer than they are wide, have pointed ends, and are arranged singly along the leaf stem. It quickly forms a dense clump of closely spaced canes that are hard to see under a mass of foliage. The new shoots are light blue with tan culm sheaths, aging to a yellowish-green.

Like all other fargesias, it does not have running rhizomes and needs no containment to prevent spread.

Medicinal use :

The leaves are used in the treatment of arthritic inflammations. The sheaths of the stem are used in the treatment of nausea and sour stomach.

Edible parts :

Young shoots - cooked. Very palatable when cooked but acrid raw. Not of the highest quality, but their large size makes them very popular. Extensively eaten in China, they are usually cooked in one change of water. The shoots are harvested in the spring when they are about 8 cm above the ground, cutting them about 5 cm below soil level. The dormant young shoots, harvested in the winter before they emerge above the ground, are especially relished as a delicacy.

Other uses :

The canes make good water pipes, they are also used for household utensils etc. The short internodes at the lower end of the cane are used as flasks, vases etc. Although the wood is relatively soft, the canes are much used for heavy construction, weaving various types of handicrafts and paper making. The rhizomes are used as walking sticks and umbrella handles.
