1706 Phaedrus
& Aesop Fables Greek Literature Stoic Philosophy Hoogstraten Dutch
“Things are not always what they seem; the
first appearance deceives many; the intelligence of a few perceives what has
been carefully hidden.”
– Phaedrus
Phaedrus was a 1st-century fabulist and Roman poet known for
his five books of verse fables. Many of his tales are adaptions of Aesop’s
famous tales, but he does include his own new stories as well. One major
difference between Aesop and Phaedrus, however, is Phaedrus’s treatment of the
moral. Phaedrus emphasized the moral of the story much more than Aesop did.
This 1706 edition was collected and edited with notes by David van
Hoogstraten – a fine early 18th-century Amsterdam edition.
