文革伊始，全国高校陷入动乱之中，招生工作从1966年至1971年中断了5年。1972年恢复招生，狠批了所谓的“反革命修正主义教育路线”，废除了高考，实行推荐，名曰“工农兵上大学”，被赞美为教育革命的伟大成果，定性为文化大革命的新生事物。当时邮票的图稿被送往“北京大学和清华大学革命大批判组”征求意见时，得到了肯定的回答“这套邮票很好，实行开门办学，把教育同三大革命运动紧密结合起来，有力地批判了旧学校的三脱离状况”。
