This plant grows 20 to 45cm tall. It has a more upright bearing than other trilliums (its stemis erect). As its name indicates, several of its parts are grouped inthrees, including its large, broadly ovate leaves and its solitaryflower with 3 dark red petals. Especially in the southern part of itsrange, this species is subject to different variations and anomalies:its petals are not always red and there may be more than 3. Its fruitis an oval, reddish berry.
The young shoots may be eaten as avegetable. The Abenakis used them to treat all sorts of illnesses ininfants. The boiled leaves may be used as a poultice on ulceratedskin. Early herbalists used it against gangrene. Its rhizome isprepared in various ways and used to treat different complaints:acne, nosebleeds, difficult childbirth, heavy menstrual bleeding,internal hemorrhaging, pulmonary problems and diarrhea.
