1668 Idolatry & Pagans BIBLE
History Jews Gentiles Vossius + Hebrew Maimonides
Gerardus Vossius was a 16th-century Dutch classical
theologian known for being one of the first to treat theological dogmas and
non-Christian religions from a historical point of view, rather than the more
accepted theological. His works of rhetoric were widely popular and were used
as textbooks during and after his lifetime. He followed Aristotelian thought
and was influenced not only by Aristotle, but also by Cicero and other ancient
philosophers.
Vossius’s “De Theologia Gentili”
was his commentary on the origins and rise of idolatry throughout history. It
gives glimpses into Gentile theologies followed in the Bible. This 1668 edition
was published in Amsterdam by Blaeu.
