This is an antique wooden newell post.  I actually found this at a Goodwill and I'm not sure what type of wood it is.  It had a worn square of wood that was falling off on the top, I took it off, I think it was being used as a pedestal or plant stand.  Not including the wood base on the bottom, it measures 28 1/2" tall and is about 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" around.  I wish I knew the history of this, It has a few chips and is somewhat worn, I would say it has a ton of character.  This is a great piece in need of a project or maybe a new plant.  If you have any questions, please ask.
