MARSHALL FRADY, who writes about Georgia's new governor, was a correspondent for Newsweek magazine when he first reported on Lester Maddox and his defiance of the civil-rights bill in 1964, and has covered Maddox's activities on many occasions since then. Now a free-lance writer, 27-year-old Frady is -- writing a book about Alabama's George Wallace for The New American Library . . . . Contributing photographer JOHN LAUNOIS, whose assignments in this issue took him to Canada's Expo 67 and to California's redwood forests, has claimed another award. John Launois His Post photograph "Chemical Fallout Over Chicago" (DEATH IN OUR AIR, October 8, 1966) won first place in the 24th annual competition of the Pictures of the Year awards . . . . WALLACE MARKFIELD, here taking an affectionate look at old movies on television, may someday find himself watching one of his own stories on the Late Show -- filming has just begun on the movie version of his comic novel To An Early Grare. .. - In addition to several plays and a screenplay, BRUCE JAY FRIEDMAN has written two successful novels (Stern and A Mother's Kisses), is now at work on a third.
