Brief History:"ONE RUPEE"

India issued "ONE RUPEENickel coins from year 1950 to 1954 after Independence and continued with British System of  coinage of  1 Rupee, 1/2 Rupee, 1/4 Rupee, 2 Annas, 1 Anna, 1/2 Anna and 1 Pice  Denominations. 

From year 1957, India changed to Decimal coinage- 1 Rupee, 50 Paise, 25 Paise, 20 Paise, 10 Paise, 5 Paise, 3 Paise, 2 Paise and 1 Paisa.  India issued a big and heavy coin of Rupee one - Nickel-10.0000 g., from 1962 to 1970.  In between, India also issued Commemorative coins of One Rupee(Nickel-10.0000g) and 50 paise(Nickel) coins to commemorate MAHATMA GANDHI  &  JAWAHARLAL NEHRU. India also issue issued "20 Paise"(Alm.Bronze) coins to commemmorate MAHATMA GANDHI 

From year 1975 to 1982, India issued coins (Nickel-8.0000 g.) of slightly reduced size/weight. 

From 1983, India issued smaller "one Rupee"(Copper-Nickel-6.0000g) coins till 1990. For years 1991 & 1992, India issued various commemmorative coins of "one Rupee"(Copper-Nickel-6.0000g) coins, to commemmorate Greatmen and Great Events.

From year 1992, India minted 'Stainless Steel'  "One Rupee" coins and continues to mint the same with changes in designs in 2007 and then 2011(with 'Rupee' currency symbol " R : in Hindi language,  unlike ' $ ' symbol for Dollars), along with few commemmorative coins in stainless steel.

(THERE WAS NO ISSUE OF “NORMAL” 'RUPEE ONE' COINS  FOR YEARS 2005 & 2006 FOR GENERAL CIRCULATION) .

 

India minted its coins in Bombay, Calcutta, Hyderabad and Noida Mints. India also got coins minted from other countries like Ottawa(Canada), Brimingham(UK), Kremnica(Slovakia), London(UK), Mexico, Pretoria, Taegu(Korea) etc. and each mint has distinct MINT MARK.
