Ryukyuan Lacquerware from the Urasoe Art Museum Collection
INTRODUCTION:
This book contains 234 works selected from the collection of the Urasoe Art Museum in Okinawa, which specializes in lacquer art. It is a recommended book that introduces many works made using various lacquer techniques. Among them, the works using the techniques of Chinkin (gold inlay) and Raden (pearl mother-of-pearl inlay) are stunningly beautiful.
The works are introduced in three chapters. At the beginning of each chapter, there is an explanation in English.
- 16th-17th centuries: Gold-inlay in Red Lacquer, Development of Raden
- 17th-18th centuries: The Flowering of Mother-of-Pearl Inlay on Black Lacquerware
- 18th-19th centuries: Mass Production of Cinnabar red lacquer with hakue (gold leaf applicatiom) and tsuikin (overlay by Lacquer paste)
