Physical Properties - Opal has hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 and very low density, from about 1.98 2.20g/cm3, depending on the water content.
Genesis - Genesis Opal is normally found in association with effusive magmatic rocks, such as rhyolites, andesities, and trachytes, having been deposited in cracks and cavities by aqueous fluids at low temperature.
Occurrence - One area of eastern Czechoslovakia formerly belonging to Hungary as been mining opal since Roman times and was the only source of noble opal for Europeans until the nineteenth century. Nowadays most Opal comes from Australia where the finest quality opal is found. Other sources are Mexico and Honduras.

This would be for a gemstone that is completely clean to the eye, but not necessary at 10x magnification. |
