Sulzer Power!

North Wales & Cambrian Lines

We have pleasure in recommending it to all those with an interest in Class 24s (and other Sulzer-engine loco types). Put together by Steve Morris and with profits going to the Class 40 Preservation Society and the East Lancashire Railway
‘Sulzer Power! – North Wales & Cambrian Lines’ is a well worthwhile purchase and includes plenty of delightful Type 2 images, including some fascinating black and white material from Barry Wynne.
A colour image of BR blue No. 24023 graces the front cover, recorded by David Rapson during the Indian summer of 1978 passenger workings.
Things are clearly in decline and the branch from Menai Bridge officially closed in 1970, although it did get a short reprieve to cater for redirected Freightliner traffic following the famous Britannia Bridge fire that closed the line to Holyhead. Other early images in the book, with Class 24s on the front, include the well-known Octel tanks and one of the last cattle train services from Holyhead to York.
The author had access to the collections of a number of well-known railway photographers to fill the 112 pages with nearly 150 images, many in colour, with detailed captions illustrating the activities of classes 24, 25, 33, 45, 46 and 47 over the years on all kinds of service. Of particular interest is the section on freight traffic, which today is non-existent on the lines covered.  Indeed, in many cases - notably live cattle - the traffic has disappeared from the whole UK network, as have the majority of the locomotives. The book is in 245 x 190mm format and is a limited edition of 500.
Let’s all do our bit for diesel preservation.
