Walter Crane was born in Liverpool and showed an early ability for illustration, making
a set of coloured designs to Tennyson's Lady of Shalott at the age of 14.
These were seen by wood engraver W. J. Linton, who then
took Crane as an apprentice for three years.  In 1864 Crane began on a series
of sixpenny toy books for children which were extremely popular.
The beautiful illustrations from The Four Seasons show how clearly Crane was influenced
by the Pre-Raphaelites, and his interest in the decorative arts led to an association with
William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, and a considerable output in the design
of textiles, wall-papers and stained glass.
In addition he undertook interior decoration and published books on the theory of design
and decorative arts.  In 1898 Crane became Principal of the Royal College of Art.
