While Lafleur has always been a Montreal Canadiens fan and makes the Remparts happy in the QMJHL, Sam Pollock, general manager of the Canadiens, is also interested in the Thurso, Quebec player who will appear in the summer of 1971 in the NHL Entry Draft

Just before the start of the 1971-1972 season, Lafleur's youth idol, Jean Béliveau, announced that he was stopping his career and offered the young Quebec player to wear his number 4. Lafleur declined, aware of the pressure that he already has on his shoulders and the surplus that carrying this number would generate. He then decides to choose number 10.
