'Peach Satin' GQ CABochon
from California

Just when you think you've seen it all, another 'collector-stone' arrives on the scene. Rich and colorful, this cab's cup runneth over with gold. What a lovely ring-stone to-be. Photos are enlarged representations. One picture illustrates how it might look set in a ring. The ring shown in my photo is not included. Only the stone is for sale. The top, show face of the cab is slightly-domed and polished. Clearer quartz windows surround some of the gold blebs creating a decidedly amber-like effect. Cab measures 14.4 mm long, 12.9 mm wide, and 3.3 mm thick. Except to say it's from California's Mother Lode, the source is unknown. This is natural, born-in-the-U.S.A. gold ore; exotic even for the Mother of all Lodes. For beauty and rarity, this gem plays in a league of it's own.

A
s the operator/sole proprietor of Gold of Eldorado, I actively sought gold in the goldfields for 18+ years. Beginning long ago, in a past life, perhaps, something in the golden mystique of this rare, precious metal attracted me to it. Searching for Au (gold), working with it in it's multitude of forms  became a life-way. This passion is what fueled my commercial enterprise selling gold and gold quartz products.

If, like myself, you're an avid fan of gold, let me know of any specific sizes, colors, or cabochon-shapes you might be interested in. I may be able to accommodate you with a custom-made creation.

GEM-GRADE GOLD QUARTZ

GQ or 'gold quartz' is, basically, gold ore. When ore is rich, aesthetic, and meets other gem-making criteria, it becomes desirable as jewelry-grade gemstone. Almost any kind of rock can be cut and made into cabs, but this is a different animal altogether because it carries the precious cargo, gold. You would not wish to crush this type of stone just to extract the gold from it. That would be like crushing gem grade diamonds for use as an abrasive. Gem-grade gold quartz is as rare and precious a mineral commodity as you will find on the planet.

If you're unfamiliar with gold quartz, here's how it originates. When conditions are just right, metallic gold-crystals (and other minerals) form inside quartz veins. This occurs as super-heated water containing silica and mineral-rich hydrothermal solutions cool. Metals, like gold, then precipitate and lithify (harden). This is part of a process known as metallogenesis. Natural weathering/erosion from richer portions of these veins ultimately yield broken-off pieces of gold quartz, nuggets, gold flakes, flour gold, and colloidial gold. Vein filling which retains the host matrix (that is, quartz), when it's dense enough and harbors the precious cargo, gold, can become one of the earth's more highly-prized gemstone minerals. Then, to liven things up a bit, the mineral characteristics of gold-bearing stone vary from vein to vein resulting in matrix variations (i.e. color, density, composition, et al).
