This is an excellent Japanese 2x tele converter with multicoated glass for most Contax/Yashica manual focus SLR cameras (exposure modes restricted on MM cameras) including classics such as the RTS and FR ranges with many Contax/Yashica manual focus lenses. The converter is in fully working order and very good condition, supplied with original soft case, generic front/rear caps and a copy of an instruction leaflet. The converter fits between the camera and lens, and doubles the focal length. It can be used with just about any lens (except some very wide/old types, where the rear elements protrude too far), but work best with standard, telephoto and zoom lenses. This description is copyright © Heritage Cameras. A 50mm standard becomes a 100mm portrait lens, and a reasonably priced 70-210mm becomes a 140-420mm, which would usually be very expensive.
The converter couples to the camera and lens auto diaphragm and full aperture metering systems, and will work in all exposure and metering modes on suitable Yashica manual focus cameras (see below), including program. It also works on many Contax models, in metered manual and aperture priority auto exposure modes where available (see below), but not program or shutter priority. TTL metering systems (including TTL flash) will handle the 2 stops exposure adjustment required automatically. The close focusing distance of the original lens is retained, so you get extra magnification for close ups. A zoom lens that focuses down to 1:4 (one quarter life size) on its own will manage 1:2 (half life size) with the converter.
This independent Super-Paragon PMC X2 Converter CO-Y uses multicoated (MC) glass for reduced flare and light loss with increased contrast and colour fidelity, and a four element optical design. It is very nicely made (in Japan) with metal barrel and lens mounts, rubber grip, and a high standard of fit and finish. It adds around 30mm (1.2") to the length of the lens attached, is up to 65mm (2.5") in diameter and weighs just 160g (5.6oz).
A great converter for many Contax and Yashica users.
Compatibility
This converter fits many manual focus 35mm film SLR cameras using the Contax/Yashica bayonet mount, as follows:
It fits Contax cameras including the RTS, RTS II, 139 Quartz, 137MD, 137MA, S2 and S2b. It's compatible with automatic diaphragm and full aperture metering, in metered manual, aperture priority auto exposure and TTL flash modes where available. It fits other Contax models such as the RTS III, 159MM, 167MT, ST, RX, RX II, AX and Aria, but without program or shutter-priority modes. Multi-segment metering on the Aria, focus confirmation on the RX, and autofocus on the Contax AX with faster lenses.
It fits Yashica cameras including the FX-1, FX-2, FX-3, Super and Super 2000, FX-7 and Super, FX-70, FX-103, FX-A, FX-D, FR, FR-1 and FR-2, plus the 107, 108 and 109 MP (Multi Program). It's compatible with automatic diaphragm and full aperture metering, in all modes including program where available.
Contax/Yashica lenses and accessories do NOT fit the Contax N-series AF models, G AF cameras, rangefinders, original M42 screw Contax series, or any other Contax models. It's NOT suitable for Yashica autofocus SLR cameras, older Yashica screw thread cameras, or the very early Pentamatic bayonet models.
