German Sterling Silver Charger Plate - Antique 1886

Description

This magnificent antique German sterling silver charger plate has an oval form.

The surface of the charger plate is embellished with an exceptional embossed and chased decorated scene depicting an elaborate and intense battle with a walled city to the background, all below the engraved inscription "A gift to a friend 1820".

The raised rounded border of this decorative platter/plate is encompassed with pinstruck swirling ornamentation.

The broad border of this exceptional example of continental silverware is embellished with impressive chased decorated lounging figural ornamentations, each accented with either a notable or nature inspired accessory; it can be determined that such a frieze of figures relates to a historical event or folklore.

The decoration to the border incorporates large scrolling leaf designs in addition to interlacing fruiting vine ornamentation, all on a matte background.

The rim of the piece is encompassed with an applied thread decorated border.

The hallmarks struck to the underside and rim of this magnificent silver plate include:

Maker"s marks: I+D (untraced)

Assay scrape: Zickzack line (Tremolierstrich)

Hanau marks: Untraced*

Importer"s mark: TG (Thomas Glaser)

Silver quality/purity mark: lion passant (sterling, 925/100)

Date letter: 1886

Additional mark: F (foreign manufacture mark)

* Hanau pseudo-marks were not registered with an administrative office and no records exist to check them against determining an attributed identification to be a comparison or probability.

Condition

This antique decorative plate is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The embossed and chased decoration is all very sharp and the pin struck ornamentation is very crisp.

The Hanau German marks struck to the underside of the plate and import hallmarks to the surface of the rim are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique German silverware.
