Mint as part of the 50 State Quarters program. It was released in 2016
and features an image of Fort Moultrie, a historic fort located on
Sullivan's Island near Charleston, South Carolina. The inscriptions on
the coin include "South Carolina," "Fort Moultrie," and "E Pluribus
Unum."
The design commemorates the important role that Fort Moultrie
played in defending the United States during the Revolutionary War and
the Civil War. The fort was originally built of palmetto logs, which
proved to be surprisingly effective in withstanding British cannon fire
during the Battle of Sullivan's Island in 1776. The coin honors the
bravery and sacrifice of American soldiers who defended the fort, and
serves as a tribute to the rich history and culture of South Carolina.
