1661 Ancient ROME
Emperors Historiae Augustae Commodus Maximus Hadrian Vellum
“Historiae Augustae” is a
rare, 17th-century collection of ancient Roman histories of Roman
Emperors by many of the ‘minor’ classical historians. Many of these histories
were written during the reigns of Constantine the Great but cover the reigns of
rulers such as Hadrian, Caracalla, Geta, Antonius, Albinus, Maximus and
Balbinus, Cassius, Commodus, Heliogabalus, Severus Alexander, and many others.
While the biographies are the appeal of this work, the authors themselves
shouldn’t be overlooked.
The 30+ biographies were written by Aelius Spartianus, Julius
Capitolinus, Vulcacius Gallicanus, Aelius Lampridius, Trebellius Pollio, and Flavius
Vopiscus Syracusanus. This particular 1661 edition of “Historiae Augustae” was edited by with commentary by Isaac
Casaubon, Janus Gruter, and Cornelius Schrevel.
