Maria del Pilar Eulalia Antonia Isabella Ludovika Franziska Josepha Rita Euphrasia von Wittelsbach, Princess of Bavaria (March 13, 1891 at Nymphenburg Palace, Munich, † January 31, 1987 there), was a German princess and painter. Princess Pilar of Bavaria was the only daughter of Prince Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria and his Spanish wife María de la Paz of Spain; she had two older brothers.
She studied art history, painting and graphics. She received her training as a painter from Hans von Bartels, Willi Geiger, Moritz Heymann and Viktoria Zimmermann. It was influenced by Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and French Impressionism. Pilar had her studio in a circular building in Nymphenburg Palace. She mainly painted landscapes, often parks with architecture and travel pictures, but also pursued genre painting (e.g. Magdalenendult in Nymphenburg, oil, 1926). Pilar belonged to the Union of Artists and the Union of Painters in Old Munich. Among other things, she organized exhibitions in the Munich Glass Palace and Haus der Kunst. Pilar von Bayern was a member of Gedok in the 1950s with the painter Karoline Wittmann, who knew each other from the Moritz Heymann painting school and often met at exhibitions in the large art exhibitions Haus der Kunst . Solo exhibitions took place in the Spanish Cultural Institute in Munich and on the occasion of her 95th birthday in the Lörch Gallery. Her pictures can be seen in the Bavarian State Gallery, in the Municipal Gallery in the Lenbachhaus and in many private collections.
