Sterling Silver Vinaigrette by John Tongue - Antique ViCtorian (1844)

Description

This exceptional antique ViCtorian sterling silver vinaigrette has a reCtangular shaped form.

The upper plateau of the cover is ornamented with a rare scene depiCting Windsor Castle* in relief, all on a matte background; a piece displaying this viewing angle is uncommon and colleCtable.

The sides of the box and cover are encompassed with a continuous band of leaf ornamentation.

The underside of this English silver vinaigrette is ornamented with chased scrolling leaf decoration incorporating a central vacant cartouche.

Both the base and cover are embellished with applied scrolling leaf decorated borders.

The hinged silver vinaigrette cover allows access to the original hallmarked hinged, pierced floral and leaf decorated silver gilt grille and original gilded interior.

The vinaigrette retains the original gilding; this has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion to an aesthetically pleasing mellow color.

* The residence of the British Royal family at Windsor, distinguishable by its ViCtorian architeCture.

Condition

This antique English silver vinaigrette is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The applied decoration is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the interior of base and cover are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of ViCtorian silverware.
