Satoru Nakajima's arrival at Tyrrell brought the Honda RA101E 3.5-liyre V10 engine used by McLaren in 1990.

Stefano Modena took the 020 to fourth place at the season opening United States Grand Prix held on the Phoenix street circuit, and finished sixth at the penultimate race in Japan. His best result, however, came at the Canadian Grand Prix. In a race of mechanical attrition, Modena found himself fourth, from a ninth place starting position, when second placed Patrese suffered a puncture and had to pit. He then suffered gearbox problems, and Modena passed him to take third.

On the last lap, leader, Mansell, waving to the crowd, let the car's engine revs drop too low and stalled, letting Piquet through to claim his 23rd and last Formula One win. Modena finished second to take his second and final podium finish.

Modena's total of ten points saw him finish eighth in the drivers' table, while Tyrrell took sixth spot in the constructors', scoring 12 points.
