Ranma is the general term for fittings installed between the ceiling and the Kamoi (doorway of a living room) in a house.
Its history dates back to the Nara period (710-794), and it has been used in ordinary homes since the Edo period (1603-1868).

Design
A wooden transom with pine, plum, and bamboo carved on it. Each design has its own meaning. Pine, bamboo, and plum trees have long been popular as good luck charms because they grow well even in cold winters and are used for wedding receptions and New Year's kadomatsu decorations.
