The F-22  was a 76.2mm Soviet Field Gun introduced in 1936. The gun was a semi-universal divisional gun also used as an anti aircraft gun. However in this latter role it was not well suited. Over all the weapon was something of a compromise which resulted in its replacement being ordered in 1937. However, the F-22 remained in active service until the end of WWII with two regiments (40 guns) serving during the Battle of Kursk in 1943.

In 1941/42 the Wehrmacht had captured hundreds of F-22 and they were pressed into service as field guns designated FK 296(r). By late 1941 it was decided to rebuild the weapon as an Anti Tank Gun 7.62cm Pak 36(r) and 560 of these were produced some of which were used to arm Marder II and Marder III tank destroyers. As an anti tank gun the Pak 36(r) saw service on both the Eastern Front and in North Africa where one destroyed nine British valentine tanks in a single engagement. There were still 165 Pak 36(r) and Pak 39(r) in servie as late as March 1945.
