INSTRUMENTS OF DARKNESS  The History of Electronic Warfare  by Alfred Price   First published in I967. this book is  regarded as the standard reference work  on the World War ll radar battle: it was  Alfred Price‘s first book and the one on  which his reputation as a historian was  founded. This edition has been enlarged  and updated and now provides a non-  technical guide to electronic warfare from  its beginnings until the present day.  The recent air actions over North  Vietnam and the Middle East have  introduced a new term into the everyday  language of armed conflict: electronic  warfare. Electronic warfare may be  defined as the science of preventing an  enemy from having the unrestricted use  of his electronic devices. while stopping  him from doing the same thing to oneself.  Previous accounts of electronic warfare  may have left the impression that the  subject is completely shrouded in secrecy  and too complex to be understood  by the layman. Both of these  impressions are misleading. Enough has.  been released in the technical press for a  knowledgeable writer to provide an  accurate introduction into the elements  of present-day electronic warfare. And  while it is true that the electronic warfare  devices themselves are often complex.  the basic principles are not difficult to s  understand if they are properly explained.  The author of Instruments of llarkness  is in an excellent position to report on this  continuing “Secret War". During a career  of twenty-two years in the Royal Air Force  Alfred Price was inti|natel_\ connected  with electronic warfare and he frequently  delivered introductory lectures to  members of the service. Since leaving the  Royal Air Force in I974 he has become a  full-time writer on aviation subjects and  is widely recognised as an authority on  all aspects of aerial warfare. His wealth ol  experience on electronic warfare,  coupled with a searching and critical        continued frmn fmnl illlp  analysis of its history up to the present  day, is now made available to the reader  in this updated edition of Instruments of  Darkness. There can be little doubt that  it will become the standard reference  work on the history of this important  subject.
