This volume contains the ceramic works of Bernard Leach, Kawai Kanjiro, and Hamada Shoji. The importance of these three ceramic artists in the contemporary ceramic art world is still insufficiently and vaguely appreciated, even though they are now widely recognized as masters in a vague sense. Although all three artists have their fair share of admirers and enthusiasts, because they are artists in the field of craft, they have not been subjected to the kind of criticism and research that has been conducted on artists in the field of fine arts. Each of the three artists already has a collection of their works that is well edited and illustrated, and includes appropriate commentary. However, in compiling a volume that brings together the masterpieces of these three masters, I would like to focus on the formation, development, and characteristics of their ceramics, as well as an evaluation of the significance of their presence in the history of pottery making. The three masters are not only masters of ceramics, but also of the spirit of the artist.
