Then, in 1953, the University of Chicago Press published its distinguished modern version, upon which this special paper edition is based. 

This special edition is actually an abridgment of the complete text, not merely a selection of noteworthy passages. Professor de Santillana has taken great pains to preserve the argument in its original form, and, where condensations were necessary, they have been placed in italics. In addition, explanatory material has been inserted in smaller italic type whenever helpful, and all relevant footnotes from the original edition have been retained. If some sections of undoubted value have been sacrificed, the sacrifices have been made with extreme regret and solely as a step toward bringing a magnificent work within the means of the average reader. Necessary abridgments notwithstanding, the most scrupulous care has been taken to maintain the original proportion of elements woven into the rich texture of the complete Dialogue.
