This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1910 and 1918. These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides. A small number of the last editions from this period (dated 1917/18 and 1918/19) had the spine price updated to 1/6d net.
The guides are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.
These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' items. Please see the Ward Lock Red Guides website for more information about the series. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.
This particular guide dates from 1910/11. This is the 5th edition revised of this title. Details as follows :
Area covered : Killarney, including Glengariff, Cork and surrounding parts of South-West Ireland.
Contents : 188 pages of text plus a 90-page section of wonderful old contemporary advertisements. 4 maps and plans (all present). 66 illustrations.
Overall condition : Very good. Just slight external wear.
Maps : Excellent. All the maps and plans are present and complete. Very little wear. No markings or damage.
Covers : Very good. Very little wear. Slight bumping to edges. No markings or damage.
Spine : Normal wear. Faint superficial creasing and splitting to cloth. No other markings or damage.
Binding : Excellent.
Pages : Excellent. Very little wear. Slight discolouration at the edges. No markings or damage.
