Halphen Silver Plate Lidded Serving Dish .

A rare piece of history!

Has the initials PHC (or PHG) for the former Peking Hotel China (Grand Hotel de Pekin) inscribed on the one side.

From the estate of a former diplomat to China.

As this was restaurant ware there are signs of wear as expected such as scuff marks or small abrasions, and minor dings and scratches. The lid has some minor denting on the inner rim (see photos). The silver plate is in great condition with some areas having more wear than others, such as the handles and lid and the inside where a spoon may have repeatedly been used. Overall, the condition is great as can been seen in the photos.

In this collection there is also available for sale in my store a Halphen/Christofle Silver Plate Restaurant Ware Hot Chocolate Pot and a Christofle Restaurant Ware Silver Plate Gravy Boat- all from the Peking Hotel China.

The Peking Hotel, or Grand Hotel de Pekin, is where numerous heads of state have stayed, such as Richard Nixon, Nikita Khrushchev, Ho Chi Minh and Sun Yat-sen to name a few. The banquet hall served guests such as Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai at the inauguration of The Peoples Republic.

The hotel is also where numerous foreign journalists stayed in the Spring of 1989, where Associated Press photographer Jeff Widener took the famous "Tank Man or Unknown Rebel" picture during the Tiananmen Square Protests.  The last meetings between the students and the government took place at the hotel on May 30th, 1989, where no agreement was reached.

Halphen and Christofle were partner companies and had a complicated business relationship. Their hallmarks and names are related to each other and generally should be considered together. (www.silver collection.it)
