This attractive cover was sent from Old Point Comfort, Virginia, on May 20, (1870s), to Mrs. Henry Lewis Johnson, wife of U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander, Henry Lewis Johnson! While I cannot be sure of the year that this was sent, it would seem to be between 1874-1875, before Lt. Commander Johnson was transferred for special duty on the Rio Grande(1875-1877)! He served on the North Atlantic Station on the U.S.S. "Canandaigua(steamer)," between 1873-1874, and the U.S.S. "Colorado(a steam frigate)" in 1875. He served the U.S. for 34 years, from 1859-1893! He had a very eventful life, to say the least!

To continue, the green, 3-Cent, U.S., "Washington," is in very fine condition! The black, CDS and fancy cancel from the Old Point Comfort P.O. are immaculate!!

Lastly, as for the envelope itself, it's in pretty good condition. Except for some light toning in some places around the edges, it's very clean! There are two, small tears in the right side due to how the envelope was opened so long ago. The back flap is complete! Very minor blemishes aside, this is a really neat piece of U.S. Naval postal history connected to Lt. Commander Henry Lewis Johnson, and his desire to stay in touch with his wife and son back in Burlington, Vermont!!
