Books about Sumiya, a set of 2 books

SUMIYA

INTRODUCTION:

In Shimabara red-light district, Sumiya was a banquet facility where customers had fun with high-class prostitutes. It belonged to the ageya business, which is equivalent to today's Japanese-style restaurant, and was the largest banquet hall in the private sector during the Edo period. In addition to banquets, tea parties and haiku gatherings were held there, and it also served as a cultural salon.

The Sumiya building is a two-story wooden structure with an inner courtyard, similar to the machiya townhouses found in Kyoto, with wooden latticework around the façade. It also features a large garden facing the large tatami room, an attached tea room, and a large kitchen, all of which are characteristic of Ageya architecture. Each of the tatami rooms has a different and elaborate design, and the luxurious architecture reflects the prosperity of Sumiya at the time and the aesthetic sense of Shimabara.
Most of these buildings are designated as important cultural properties of Japan as they are the only remaining structures in the Ageya style.
