The author was a British commissioner assigned to the region with the task of establishing boundaries between Persia, Russia and Ottoman Empire. His book includes portions on history, natural history, travel, politics, and culture.

Curzon was joint British Commissioner in Erzurum as part of the British-Turkish-Persian-Russian boundary commission sitting to delineate the Turkish and Persian frontier (1842-1843).
