R.M.Williams is a well-known footwear brand that was established in 1932. The founder, Reginald Murray “R.M.” Williams, was an Australian bushman and entrepreneur who rose from a swagman to a millionaire. He was born in Belalie North near Jamestown in South Australia, into a pioneering settler family working and training horses.
R.M. Williams learned leatherworking skills from a passing horseman known as Dollar Mick in the Flinders Ranges. His first success came by selling saddles to the owner of a group of cattle stations, which enabled him to set up shop in his father’s shed at 5 Percy Street in the Adelaide suburb of Prospect in 1934. This location now hosts the R.M. Williams Outback Heritage Museum.
