This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1910 and 1918. These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides. A small number of the last editions from this period (dated 1917/18 and 1918/19) had the spine price updated to 1/6d net.
The guides are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.
These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' items. Please see the Ward Lock Red Guides website for more information about the series. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.
This particular guide dates from 1917/18, 17th edition revised. Details as follows :
Area covered : The English Lake District and surrounding parts.
Contents : 192 pages of text plus a 70-page section of wonderful old contemporary advertisements. 4 maps and plans (all complete). Over 60 illustrations.
Overall condition : Rather worn, with some external damage.
Maps : Very good. All the maps and plans are present. The first map is loose and scuffed at one edge, but all the others are in excellent condition with very little wear and no markings or damage.
Covers : Worn and faded, with faint superficial markings (see scan).
Spine : Also rather worn and faded, with superficial bumping. No other markings or damage.
Binding : Generally very good, but one slight crack which has caused a bit of looseness.
Pages : Normal wear. Quite a lot of discolouration and rubbing, especially at edges. The front title page appear to be missing. No other markings or damage.
Other : This is a well used guide, but a rare early edition, and it is still complete and offers a fascinating read.
