A rare antique butterfly bowl by George Jones & Sons circa 1877.  It is modelled in porcelain of boat like crescent form at their 'Crescent Pottery' in Staffordshire.  The crescent bowl is held between the upstretched wings with two butterflies alighted on two segments of prunus branches in blossom.

This gorgeous bowl is hand painted in turquoise majolica glaze, coloured enamels and gilding against the white glazed porcelain ground.

It is marked to two of the feet with Victorian registration lozenge marks registered on 2nd May 1877 by George Jones & Sons of Crescent Pottery in the Staffordshire Potteries Stoke on Trent.  It also has hand painted painters code '4882', which probably relates to this particular colourway.

It has a small shallow flake chip to the end of the bowl rim on one side, (this has been touched up at some point with gold paint).  There is also a small firing fault hairline flaw to the top inside edge of the bowl about 1 cm in length, otherwise the piece is in good condition (please see photos).

Height 8.5 cm, length 19.2 cm, unpacked weight 333 grams.
