Title Introduction to Karate
Author Toyama Kanken
Publication Year 1962
Unfortunately, due to its 1962 publication date, this book has also become less accessible in Japan.
This book serves as the introductory section of the 'Karate-Do Daiho-Kan,' and it was compiled with the goal of being 'the only excellent work on Karate-Do' for everyone interested in Karate, including those who are about to begin their studies and those who have already reached a considerable level of proficiency. However, due to the limitations of available pages, it is impossible to provide a detailed explanation of the more than fifty basic open-handed forms, several hundred techniques of soft and hard methods, sister martial arts, Chinese martial arts, and women's self-defense in Karate. These deficiencies will be addressed in subsequent volumes of the 'Daiho-Kan.' In this book, we classify the contents into several parts in the first volume, including a general overview (fundamental theory), specific discussions (organizational theory), basic training, forms, and sparring. We aim to provide clear, concise, friendly, thorough, and responsible explanations. In particular, in the section on secret techniques in the later part, the author explains the principles and secrets of 'profound skills exhibited in front of the masses' that he has demonstrated in various locations, including the Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo, Nakanoshima Public Hall in Osaka, Karate exhibitions nationwide, and to both domestic and foreign press corps.
