Antique circa 1920's August Hanke ceramic footed bowl. It is finely hand thrown by August himself in fine porcelain of elegant wide ogee form on an unusual foot with pronounced cut back just beneath the bowl form.  It is decorated to the inside of the bowl with a hand incised design of two concentric circles linked by double lines in a crucifix shape.  The tips of the cross and the centre of the design have applied white slip balls, dots all against a semi matt light celadon coloured glaze with dark stains around the decoration.

This very rare piece is marked to the base with the hand incised personal mark of August himself 'Hanke'.  See example in 'Malcolm Haslam Marks & Monograms The Decorative Arts 1880-1960, page 153.  It is rare because it was created by August Hanke himself after the devastating fire of 1921 that completely destroyed the factory set up by Reinhold Hanke, August and Carl Hanke's father.  August tried to re-establish the factory but all the moulds had been destroyed in the fire, and he was only able to make a limited number of items in a studio pottery like set up until his death in 1928, all of which bear his personal signature mark.  Although the design could be a Henry Van Der Velde design, we believe the ball dotted design is far more in the style of Paul Wynand.

It is in very good condition with no damage or repair (please see photos).

Diameter 21cm, height 8.5 cm.
