In 2020, the United States Mint released a quarter honoring the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The Tallgrass Prairie quarter features a design that depicts an Regal Fritillary butterfly in flight over a blooming patch of Big Bluestem and Indian grasses, which are native to the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. The design also includes the inscriptions "Tallgrass Prairie," "Kansas," "2020," and "E Pluribus Unum."
Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas and is one of the few remaining examples of the tallgrass prairie that once covered much of the central United States. The preserve protects a unique and endangered ecosystem, providing a habitat for diverse plant and animal species, including the Regal Fritillary butterfly. The quarter design celebrates the natural beauty and biodiversity of the tallgrass prairie landscape in Kansas.
