Select works of George John Whyte-Melville. An incomplete set.

Uniformly bound in half calf bindings by Sotheran & Co. Externally, very elegant with gilt titles, gilt decoration to the compartments, page edges marbled, and marbled end papers.

Pages generally tanned with foxing generally to the start and end of volumes.

In 10 [of 27] Volumes, as follows:

The Gladiators, General Bounce, The Queen's Maries, Good for Nothing, Bones and I, Holmby House, The Interpreter, Satanella, Uncle John, and Sarchedon.

George John Whyte Melville was a Scottish novelist of the sporting-field and a poet. After translating Horace in 1850, he published his first novel, Digby Grand, in 1853, which was a huge success.

He went on to publish twenty-one novels. Whyte-Melville was a popular writer in the main genres, that of historical romance and hunting. He became a popular writer on hunting with most of his heroes or heroines active or would-be hunters.

His work was said to inspire the novels of Henry Hawley Smart and the verse of John Woodcock Graves.

Provenance – no bookplates or signatures.
