Geranium sylvaticum, the wood cranesbill or woodland geranium, is a species of hardy flowering plant in the family Geraniaceae, native to Europe and northern Turkey.
The Latin specific epithet sylvaticum means "of woodland ", referring to the plant's native habitat, as does its common name "wood cranesbill".
The geranium on offer is geranium sylvaticum Alba. It is of the purest white one will ever see in all hardy geraniums. It is identical in the growing habit and size to Geranium Sylvaticum "Mayflower", both about 75cm tall and 60 cm wide upon reaching maturity.
Once established, they require minimal attention. And happy almost in any garden situation or tipe of soil with the reasonable drainage.
Cut flower : Yes. No. Maybe.
When it comes to deciding, will they make a good cut flower, opinion is divided. My florist would say no, as they don't last in the wase as long as florist would like them to, and losing their colourful petals like a confetti, therefore too messy for a conventional flower arrangements.
But I would definitely say yes!
They are a delightful addition to any of my domestic flower arrangements : fresh little posy on my husband's desk to welcome him to his study in the morning, or cheering up an alfresco dining table, or decorating any event which doesn't last longer than 1 to 3 days.
